Women across Rwanda will soon benefit from broader access to important digital resources, through their government’s new EQUALS global network partner status. The Government of Rwanda has become an official EQUALS Partner and will also benefit from the support of the EQUALS Access Coalition. The Access Coalition – together with the Skills Coalition, the Leadership Coalition and the Research Group – form the four pillars of EQUALS supporting its goal to bridge the digital gender divide.
The Access Coalition brings EQUALS Partners together to “ensure that women and girls have full access to digital technologies, devices and services.” The key goals of the coalition are to demonstrate a reduction in the gender gap in internet access in at least two countries where targeted action has been taken by coalition members, and to deliver evidence-based case studies which provide illustrative examples of how to increase women and girl's access to and use of the Internet.
The coalition is facilitated by GSMA, an EQUALS founding partner and organization representing the intere
sts of mobile operators worldwide, uniting nearly 800 operators with more than 300 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem.
Rwanda has made significant strides towards transforming the country into a knowledge-based economy, where information and communication technologies (ICTs) are central to the national growth and development strategy. This vision has been complemented with heavy investment in ICT skill training and economic empowerment of girls and women.
